Title Type Pricing Played Favorite Impression
7th Guest still picture puzzle budget yes   horribly convoluted and boring puzzles with no plot
11th Hour, The still picture puzzle budget no   see 7th Guest
Age of Wonders perspective strategy budget no
Aliens versus Predator 3D action full yes   very fast-paced and tough; you will die and "shit your pants" many many times; truly scary when playing as a marine; most fun to play the Alien; very strange and limited save feature; before the latest patch you couldn't save at all! better in AvP 2
Aliens versus Predator 2 3D action budget yes * more varied than the first AvP and better saving system, yet the goals are very haphazard
All in One - 10 Action Games miscellaneous budget some   what was I thinking! actually some of the games are good, and were probably very good at the time of launch, but as they are from '98 they are a bit stale by now
Alone in the Dark 3 cartoon adventure/action budget some   with today's measures complete garbage
Amiga Classics miscellaneous budget no   lot's of Amiga games
American McGee's Alice 3D action/adventure budget several times * nice graphics and decent puzzle level (compared to most 3D games that have no puzzles at all); less creative than one might think but still a joy to play; sometimes incredibly frustrating jump/hover puzzles
Amerzone panorama adventure budget yes   brought back the joy of Myst-like adventure games, but it was way too short and a bit buggy
Atlantis still picture adventure budget some
Atlantis II panorama adventure budget some
Azrael's Tear 3D adventure budget several times * my favorite 3D adventure, as it's incredibly immersive; sound is used in a very aware way; some scenery is breath-taking; unfortunately can not utilize 3D boards, which makes the graphics a bit pale by today's standards; clever puzzles and different endings
Baldur's Gate II - Shadows of Amn perspective roleplay budget some
Battlefield 1942 3D action/adventure budget no
Beyond Good & Evil 3D action/adventure budget some * platform-like game with lots of "coin" collection; nice graphics and funny creatures and dialogue, and it's got a story too; Rayman-like cartoonish graphics but more realistic and serious
Call of Duty Deluxe Edition 3D action/adventure budget some   rather realistic (one bullet is enough for you to bite the dust) and noisy, but also very episodical
Chessmaster 6000 strategy full yes   excellent chess game for training as it contains an immense tutorial; its engine is said to not be very strong, but I sure can't beat it, no way no how; tremendous replay value, if you like chess that is
Chessmaster 7000 strategy budget yes   very similar to Chessmaster 6000, yet slightly better, and worth an upgrade at budget price
Chessmaster 10th Edition strategy full yes * as CM 6000 and CM 7000 don't work in Windows XP I'd planned to buy something newer, but decided to wait for something that was enough different from those earlier versions; as I'm terrible at chess, it's very much the tutorial aspects of CM that I need (for pure game play I can use Winboard or similar free tools); CM 10th Edition (or CMX for short) is a nice surprise with a clean interface, very good and actually useful "real" 3D rendering of chess boards and pieces; The King engine is now very strong; not that it matters to me, as I have a hard time beating even low-ranked avatars; CMX seems to have good network play support, but I haven't tried that yet; clearly recommended in any case; worth the money not the least due to its longevity (unless I again need to update due to OS incomaptibility); I didn't get any 3D glasses though; maybe not in the EU version
Chronomaster still picture puzzle/adventure budget some   terrible! pixelhunting and completely illogical puzzles
Civilization perspective strategy budget no
Civilization II perspective strategy budget no
Classic Text Adventure Masterpieces of Infocom text adventure budget some   text adventures galore, if you can stand the "sudden death" characteristic of adventure games at the time
Clive Barker's Undying 3D action/adventure budget several times * scared the hell out of me many times; very engrossing atmosphere due to good positional sound effects and beautiful scenery; confusing at times, jumping between time periods and environments, and plot hard to detect (if though decent). Worth to play through for the scare alone.
Command & Conquer - Tiberian Sun perspective strategy budget some   tiny little figures and vehicles moving all over the terrain, blowing each other up
Curse of Monkey Island, The cartoon adventure budget some   was fairly logical in the beginning, but turned into a "run around for the next completely illogical puzzle piece" type game; it tries to be funny, but falls flat on its ass; I hated it
Darkstone 3D perspective action budget some   if you like Diablo, this is probably in your alley; I don't like this type of game, as it gets too repetitive
Descent I and II 3D action budget some   by being able to fly in all directions makes it sometimes confusing, and it's often hard to hit enemies by not being able to aim fast and reliably enough; yet fun games
Deus Ex 3D action/adventure full several times * the longest game I've played with the exception of the Elder Scrolls games; immersive and realistic (environment-wise, not weapon and endurance-wise); one of the very best games I've played
Doom Accessory Pack Volume II 3D action full yes   lots of levels for Doom and Doom II; some very well done
Drakan: Order of the Flame 3D action/adventure budget several times * nice looking natural environments (visible from both ground and air); nice varied puzzles, but combat-wise a bit too hard in my opinion
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey 3D action/adventure budget yes * more of a 3D movie than an actual game, but nevertheless very enjoyable; graphics, voice-acting, story are excellent, fighting and control scheme are not; the control scheme is actually horrible, and is the main let-down
Dungeon Keeper 3D perspective strategy budget some   my impression is you see too little at a time, which complicates play; otherwise seemingly nice strategy game, with some comical elements as well
Dungeon Keeper 2 3D perspective strategy budget some   very nice 3D graphics, possibility to zoom freely, bigger game areas etc etc make DK2 a much better game than DK1 despite the fact that it's more or less the same game with a new look
Dungeon Siege 3D roleplaying budget yes   fairly entertaining, beautiful and varied graphics, yet too much repetitive hack and slash
Evolva 3D action/adventure budget some
Fallout perspective roleplaying budget some
Far Cry 3D action/adventure budget some
F.E.A.R. 3D action/adventure budget twice   very intense action and realistic graphics and sound effects; sometimes too much of a "kill everything in sight" in my opinion; less to manipulate in the game world than would be expected from a Havoc-based game, but in any case it's an exciting ride, with some scary moments (yet way less than reviews indicated)
Fifth Element, The 3D action/arcade budget some   copies the main characters; not possible to save within level, yet has multiple lives (seems an out-dated way to solve death situations); nice scenery and fairly fun to play, yet cumbersome character control
Forsaken 3D simulator bundle some   a decent Descent (pun) rip-off, yet with much better graphics
Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within video adventure full some   a horrible "find the pixel, infinite babbling" garbage game, with a very annoying main character; can't understand why it got so many awards
Gabriel Knight 3 3D adventure budget yes   in my opinion better than GK 2, which doesn't say much; actually it's fairly good; 3D doesn't add much to gameplay, but it's still better than the crummy "real life" video used in GK 2.
Giants - Citizen Kabuto 3D action/adventure/resource budget some   seems to be genuinely fun and tasks are varied; very colorful and beautiful scenery; I don't like the inability to save during game-play
Half Life 3D action/adventure budget twice * one of the very best games I've played; combines action and puzzle-solving in a nice way and being quite realistic as well; the ending levels (in space) are terrible though; they should have left them out
Half Life 2 3D action/adventure full 3 times   very clean and episodical; too much scripted action in my opinion, and graphics are not very impressive relative to e.g. Oblivion
Half Life 2 - Episode 1 3D action/adventure full 3 times   the first in a series of 3 games; due to that quite short; I played through the whole game in one day
Heretic 3D action full yes   based on the Doom engine, but in a fantasy setting; I liked it at the time
Heretic II 3D action/adventure full several times * excellent scenery and game play; rather short game, but good while it lasts
Hexen 3D action budget some   not as good as Heretic despite being a later game; the hub type game play gets boring pretty quick
Hexen II 3D action budget yes   very nice scenery, but fairly boring game play; not the least because of incredibly dumb foes
Hitman 2 3D action/adventure bundle some
Hobbit, The 3D action/adventure budget yes   really a fairly simplistic yet fun platform game, with a few puzzles; except for the cut scenes, it doesn't have very much to do with The Hobbit story
HomeWorld 3D strategy borrow no
Icewind Dale perspective roleplaying budget some
Incoming 3D simulator bundle some   fairly realistic and environmentally varied simulator game, both on the ground and in the air (and space); felt boring after a while
Journeyman Project Turbo, The still picture adventure budget yes   crippled with very slow graphics (despite "Turbo"); with today's standards a very short game
Journeyman Project 2, The: Buried in Time still picture adventure full yes   excellent graphics and music; sometimes too hard/convoluted puzzles
King's Quest 5 cartoon adventure budget some   simple gameplay yet with some really tricky puzzles
King's Quest 7: Mask of Eternity 3D action/adventure full yes   it's supposed to be an adventure, but there are very few puzzles and not very good ones at that, and there is much too much killing, for no purpose; bad 3D engine that makes you think you are walking in mist all the time; very badly designed controls (separate movement and view controls); some very nice scenery though; I recommend to play at the simplest level: all puzzles are there, but you get less "broken bones"
Legend of Kyrandia Book 1 cartoon adventure budget some
Legend of Kyrandia Book 2 - The Hand of Fate cartoon adventure budget yes   some beautiful graphics and tough puzzles
Legend of Kyrandia Book 3 - Fables and Fiends cartoon adventure budget some   beautiful graphics but rather convoluted puzzles
Little Big Adventure 2 3D adventure budget some   very charming characters and scenery; completely stuck at a timing sensitive puzzle
Lighthouse still picture adventure full yes   excellent adventure game if it hadn't been for a few too far fetched puzzles; possible to get completely stuck without knowing (which is a definite no-no in game design)
Longest Journey, The still picture/3D adventure budget yes * nicely paced, long and creative game; varied puzzles, yet where some of them are not so well designed
Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring 3D action/adventure budget yes   hack and slash action game with no trace of puzzles; you play as Frodo, Gandalf or Aragorn; the best in the game is the very quick switching between melee and archer weapons, making them both useful during a fight; extremely short game that I played in a few hours; where are the sequels? do I bother?
Magic Carpet 2 3D action budget some   very fast flying game that is fun to play; very crummy graphics (why not make an MC 3 with 3D hardware support?)
M.A.X. 2 topdown strategy budget no
Mafia 3D action/adventure budget some
Max Payne 3D action/adventure budget yes   good design with comic strips as cut scenes, yet gets stale after a while as it's more of the same throughout the game
Max Payne 2 3D action/adventure budget yes
Medal of Honor - Allied Assault 3D action/adventure borrow some   very realistic but seemingly not flexible in how to go about tasks
Messiah 3D action/adventure? budget some   the controls suck; nice graphics; buggy
Might&Magic VII - For Blood and Honor 3D roleplaying budget some   dated (but yet) 3D graphics (flat NPC's; Yikes!) and lousy controls
Might&Magic IX 3D roleplaying budget some   a pale RPG: ugly graphics, bad AI, lack of story
Morrowind (The Elder Scrolls III) 3D roleplaying/adventure full yes * excellent 3D graphics and reality simulation; compared to most 3D shoot-them-ups the foes and creatures are "stupid" without much of tactics; no puzzles to solve; instead most tasks are of "run errands" type, which lowers the impression of the game a bit; open-ended, yet with a main thread; first real RPG I've played through, and I'm happy I did
Morrowind - Tribunal (The Elder Scrolls III) 3D roleplaying/adventure budget yes * being an extension it's much smaller than the original Morrowind game, which all in all was not a drawback; I played through the main quests and most sub-quests in approx. 20 hours; very good sub-surface levels; actually better and more individual caves/dungeons than in Morrowind and clearly better extension than Bloodmoon
Morrowind - Bloodmoon (The Elder Scrolls III) 3D roleplaying/adventure budget yes   fairly disappointing Morrowind extension: more focus on running errands (which I hate) than exploring and figuring stuff out
Murder, Death, Kill (MDK) 3D action budget some   one of the few games that succeed at being funny; maybe because you can blow up the ones that make fun of you (I wish that could be legally done in real life too :) )
Murder, Death, Kill 2 (MDK 2) 3D action budget some
Myst still picture adventure full 3 times * incredibly immersive and clever puzzles (despite the game's simplicity); varied environments, begging to be explored; more immersive than Riven
Myst 2: Riven still picture adventure full yes   very beautiful scenery, but a great disappointment; puzzles and game play are not at all en par with Myst
Myst 3: Exile panorama adventure budget yes * better than Myst and Riven and en par with Zork Nemesis; has borrowed moods and themes from the latter and Zork Grand Inquisitor; fairly short; well-balanced puzzles (at least for my low IQ)
Neverwinter Nights 3D roleplaying budget some   good dialogue and atmosphere; fairly simplistic graphics when looking at details, but from normal "height" everything looks very good; has been fairly easy and entertaining so far
No One Lives Forever 3D action/adventure budget some   I hate games that make you replay the whole section without possibility to save at critical points, 'nough said
No One Lives Forever 2 3D action/adventure budget yes * clearly better then the first game, despite some silly levels that were more like old arcade games (re-spawning foes in droves etc.); considerably better AI and graphics
Oblivion (The Elder Scrolls IV) 3D roleplaying/adventure full yes * WOW! Follow the link for more information
Oblivion - Knights of the Nine 3D roleplaying/adventure full yes   Follow the link for more information
Oblivion - Shivering Isles 3D roleplaying/adventure full yes   Nice extension to Oblivion and less serious, but too pricey in my opinion; Follow the link for more information
Of Light and Darkness - The Prophecy still picture puzzle budget some   incomprehensible, meaningless and repetitive plot, kind of like Shivers; lacking purpose
Outcast 3D adventure full some   very nice landscape graphics, yet not very detailed; a lot of "babbling" with other characters which gets very boring after a while; no real puzzles
Outpost perspective strategy full some   if you like resource management games this might be nice; I found out that I don't
Pariah 3D action/adventure budget yes   nice graphics and quick and simple gameplay; useful weapons upgrade feature; incomprehensible story, very short, lacking save system and bad AI; recorded voice volume is very low
Prey 3D action borrow yes * fast-paced shooter with some simple puzzle solving; you never really "die" in this game, so in theory you don't have to save during gameplay; ran fairly well on my now outdated PC
Project Eden 3D action/adventure/puzzle budget several times * I started playing this game knowing that the focus of the game is on puzzles rather than action, which seemingly others didn't and were therefor disappointed. There's a lot of action too, but it's in the puzzle department this game really shines; I really liked seeing the same environment from 4 characters' views, and being able to really make use of the team by them cooperating on solving those puzzles (both because they had different skills and therefor only certain characters could do certain things, but also because some puzzles required 2 or more of the characters cooperating in real time); I got a true sense of achievement when I solved the puzzles, as they were all very logical and possible to figure out; In terms of puzzles I'd like to compare with Myst 3, but due to the coop model there's really no other game that is truly similar; The environments are at times breathtaking and large-scaled; The main disappointments the simplicity of foe behavior (often just running onto my characters with no possibility to take cover or lay out a strategy beforehand) and that the "follow me" mode worked badly (characters often got confused as to what path to take and sometimes stopping altogether, forcing me to handle those stray cats manually (almost like herding cats (a nod to Terry Pratchett, if anyone noticed :)...))); All in all, the action is badly designed, but the environment modelling and puzzle solving aspects of the game are outstanding
Quake II 3D action full several times at toughest level * a solid shoot-them-up game, yet suffering from a bit too predictable enemies; my favorite weapon was the grenade launcher, as it helped me in many situations by throwing grenades around corners; interestingly moaning female opponents (hmm...)
Quake III Arena 3D action budget yes   shoot-them-up focusing on network play; the single-player game is fun, very intense, but unimaginative; no story-line what-so-ever; network play is where Q3 flies, yet worse network features and stability than Unreal Tournament; beautiful graphics, more so than in UT
Quake IV 3D action budget yes * it starts off as a rather dull run-of-the-mill game, but becomes almost F.E.A.R.-hectic and with scenery similar to Prey; as a whole I strongly liked it, even though Quake II surprisingly still stands out as a more innovative game; graphically Quake IV is similar to Doom 3 and Prey, and when playing it (2008-02) it was still quite impressive graphics-wise; multi-player I haven't tested yet, but is supposed to be very much like Quake III
Rainbow Six 3 - Raven Shield - Gold Edition 3D team action budget no
Rama still picture adventure budget yes * fairly good puzzle-based adventure, yet short; strongly related to Rama 2 (the book by Arthur C. Clarke)
Rayman 2 3D action/adventure budget some   seems made for children, but provides real fun also for elders; lousy save game system and control system
Red Faction 3D action/adventure budget twice   at first impression it seemed like Half-Life or Deus Ex, but is actually much more simplistic; entertaining in the beginning but got boring at the end as the only way the game achieves higher complexity at the end is to throw even more of the same at you; not a very creative approach; fairly short game and linear
Redguard 3D action/adventure/role budget some   engrossing; nice approach with free roaming in a clearly mapped landscape and town; ugly graphics due to no 3D acceleration (3dfx only)
Requiem - Avenging Angel 3D action budget yes   straightforward action, yet with better than average environments; very little problem-solving and very linear
Return to Castle Wolfenstein 3D action budget some   nice graphics and game play; sometimes extremely hard
Riddle of the Sphinx panorama adventure budget some   there were made some very good adventure games a few years ago; this is not one of them
Roberta Williams Anthology, The cartoon adventure (mainly) full some
Rune 3D action budget twice * fun game; simple fighting, and forget about the Viking mythology, but with clever twists of the simple 1st person shooter theme
Safecracker panorama adventure budget yes   on the verge of getting boring as the main thing you do is to open safes; it survives though, and is in practice pleasant and fairly simple, despite being a bit buggy
Sanitarium perspective adventure budget yes   the perspective style seems very old-fashioned, but it has its elements of quality, including some clever puzzles
Secrets of the Luxor still picture adventure budget yes   very nice and creative game, that is getting really hard at the end; beautiful graphics
Serious Sam - First Encounter 3D action budget yes   almost unbearably intense, with hords of foes attacking you continuously; almost Doom feel to it; very short game, and overall a tad disappointing (quantity (of foes) instead of quality)
Shadow Man 3D action/adventure budget some   nicely paced and involving story; annoying foes that resurrect (well, how do you kill someone that is already dead in the land of the dead anyway?)
Shivers still picture adventure budget some   very nice graphics once inside the museum; puzzles are not varied, which makes it very boring
Shivers 2: Harvest of Souls still picture adventure budget some   yuck! sucks big time; completely pointless
Soldier of Fortune II - Double Helix 3D action bundle some
Soul Reaver 2 3D action/adventure budget some
Space Bar panorama adventure budget some   succeeding to be truly funny sometimes; very tough and illogical puzzles; ugly graphics
Splinter Cell, Tom Clancy's 3D action/adventure budget some
Starship Titanic panorama adventure full some   a so-so game with some comedy that works; the game is though strangely barren, with very little to do, despite a lot of work seems to have been put into the game engine and the text input interface
Syberia still picture/3D adventure budget yes * nice laid-back-paced adventure game focused on story rather than intricate puzzles, similar to The Longest Journey, but considerably shorter; very realistic pre-rendered environments; somewhat annoyed by all phone calls that were more or less redundant; also sometimes pixel hunting; overall though a very solid and pleasant experience
Syberia II still picture/3D adventure budget yes   almost as good as Syberia, but with a few puzzles that were a bit too hard for me, especially the lemming puzzle (if you've played it you know what I mean); graphics are as good as ever etc; I wish there was a follow-up, or at least other games by Benoit Sokal
System Shock 2 3D action budget some   seems similar to Half Life in mood, but I found it to be way harder, as there's not free room enough to play out strategies; lacks support for 32-bit graphics (weird!)
The Thing 3D action budget some
Thief Gold 3D action/adventure budget 3 times * the way of using sound and sight to add new dimensions to the game play certainly worked, but they could have done more to the level design and puzzles; the puzzles were mainly of "find key, unlock door"-type; sometimes really scary (expecting to get caught while sneaking around)
Thief 2 - Metal Age 3D action/adventure budget 3 times * a good follow-up to Thief 1; less of "aliens" in this one
Thief 3 - Deadly Shadows 3D action/adventure budget twice   not as good as Thief - Dark Project; issues with the 3D engine that can't handle large environments, requiring constant transferring between "rooms"; certainly enjoyable as a fantasy stealth game, with more story and surprises than modern Splinter Cell type games
Tomb Raider - The Last Revelation 3D action/adventure budget some   outdated controls; crashed so often I gave up
Torin's Passage cartoon adventure full yes * fairly fun game that was generally fairly simple but at times also "hair tearingly" hard
Traitor's Gate panorama adventure full some   so far I've mainly been running around the place and am stuck in the sewers; surprisingly coarse graphics and slow game-play
TRON 2.0 3D action budget twice   much better than critics have claimed; some cheesy arcade style interim levels (which I in cases skipped) but the overall game was fun and graphics were outstanding; very good use of positional audio
Ultima IX Ascension 3D action/role/adventure budget some   marvellous graphics and setting, but slow both in terms of the rendering and the game play; yet I wonder why this game got so bad reviews; because the rats carry money and are large as cows? naah!
Unreal 3D action borrow several times * marvellous game; at the beginning it's a bit boring, but later both sceneries and situations make up for that big time; at places it's very hard; clever foe design and IQ
Unreal Tournament 3D action budget yes   good for multiplay; bad for singleplay (as it doesn't contain any such levels, yet you can play against rather intelligent bots)
Unreal 2 - The Awakening 3D action budget yes   in my opinion better than most have said; beautiful graphics, but fairly short
Uru - Ages Beyond Myst 3D puzzle budget yes   beautiful graphics; they've really put a lot of effort into creating an ambience; the game play is sometimes confusing due to the jumps between ages; On the same level of game play as Riven yet a bit better; not as good as Myst and Myst Exile; the question is why they didn't make the new Myst IV in 3D; it would have worked nicely
Uru - Path of the Shell 3D puzzle budget yes   very confusing and pointless; some have given this a high rating, but it's certainly not worth it; graphics are still beautiful, but I'm wondering if it's at all possible to solve without a walkthrough or extreme patience
Wheel of Time 3D action/role/adventure full twice   excellent graphics, but needs a powerful PC; considering it's based on the Unreal engine this is a bit strange
Zork Grand Inquisitor panorama adventure full several times   intended to be funny but fails at that; can't compare with Zork Nemesis; there are some clever puzzles though but too few and too messed up environment; the style is "text adventure turned graphic"
Zork Nemesis panorama adventure full several times * very immersive with beautiful scenery and decently complex puzzles; gains even more points through very varied "levels" that you can play in any order
