Beginning J2ME

A must-have for new and seasoned
to Java ME and MIDP. Excellent book that I read from cover to cover.
It describes Java ME used in mobile/cell phones (read: MIDP/CLDC) and it
explains most of the related newer JSRs as well, including
JTWI, Bluetooth, PIM, File Connection etc, and it's fairly
new (April 2005). As such it's frankly the only fairly
up-to-date book around, which is odd considering the success of
Java ME for phones. If you are into Java ME game development you can
probably find more focused books, but if you are into more
serious applications, including corporate ditto, this is the
book to get. It assumes
some knowledge of Java, but is easy to follow without that
(at least if you know C(++), PHP or similar before). The code
examples can be downloaded from the
Apress site. |
Thinking in Java

A comprehensive guide to the Java
language. I read the digital version of the 2nd edition from 2000. Both the 2nd and 3rd
editions are available for free via
Bruce Eckel's site
including all code examples (don't ask me why I didn't read the
3rd edition; absent-minded I guess). Comprehensive means it also
gets a bit academic at times, but it covers most aspects of the
Java language. Note that it doesn't describe any development
tools nor provides any specific treatment of J2SE, J2EE or Java ME. |
