Linux, Open Source and ... Stuff

This page just provides some pointers to organisations working or in relation to Linux.

Linux is said to be the fastest growing operating system now, and is making headway especially for heavy-duty application and file servers, but is now being adopted also in e.g. mobile phones. It's a very powerful and flexible operating system, still not as adapted to the normal office worker as Windows and MacOS.

GNU ("GNU is Not Unix") complements Linux and other UNIX clones with UNIX-like commands and applications. Many GNU applications also work under Windows.

SourceForge is a repository and meeting point for open source developers. Most things open source can be found here. I'm admin for RSSWML.

Free Software Foundation (FSF) is the organization handling administration and licensing of open source software, like Linux and GNU. You may sponsor FSF. They'll appreciate it very much.

Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) should also be mentioned, as they administrate and develop the network and application protocols used on the Internet and on local networks. Other organisations like Open Mobile Alliance adopt IETF's specifications.

World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) deals mainly with the content handling for the WWW, including the HTML, XHTML, CSS and related media formats. Increasingly involved in standards for mobile browsing.
