Wireless Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communication

Introduction

Wireless Machine-to-Machine (or M2M) Communication is a crucial part of the expansion of the Internet or the Web to also equipment. Some even say it's part of Web 3.0, that's also being called "The Internet of Things". Not that it really matters. The point is: There will be a hell of a lot of devices communicating on their own with services, other devices and people. That's a promise!

Just to mention a few examples:

  • weather stations that autonomously (or on demand) and wirelessly report current weather status.
  • trucks, boats, containers etc that tell where they are and if they are feeling fine.
  • dogs, cats, children and elderly (not necessarily in that priority order) that also tell where they are and how they feel without having to do it themselves (necessarily).
  • industry equipment that are monitored remotely.
  • big text displays that get new content over the air
  • etc etc

The terminal part of an M2M solution is often called a GSM (or CDMA) modem or module. I will use the term M2M module throughout these pages, as that term is radio technology independent, and because such devices now are becoming intelligent in the sense that they can run user-developed applications internally.

As mobile radio and the Internet are being used, the M2M modules, the services, the service operators and the end-users can be anywhere in the world. Kind of like is shown in this diagram.

Working with M2M related projects is part of Abiro's business, primarily in terms of feasibility studies, project definitions, project management etc, so if you are interested in getting help with that, please let us know.
