Philips jumps on the low-cost train
Philips China promises a phone reference design with a Bill of Material of $20 and even hints at $15 later on. That's kind of ... very low indeed. Others will make commercial phones on this design. The reference design will support voice, SMS and poly ringtones (so at least users can buy ringtones :) ) and use a monochrome display.

Target markets are China, India, Africa, South America and Eastern Europe.

"Right now, 77 percent of the world's population lives within range of a mobile phone network, but only 25 percent of the world's population subscribes to a mobile phone service. All around the world operators have the infrastructure in place for mobile services, but the relatively high cost of mobile phones is holding back potential subscribers," said Laurent.
