RIM circumvents shutdown
For the mere sum of $612.5M, that RIM paid NTP, RIM doesn't have to shut down its service. Oddly, the workaround that's been written about lately would have been much cheaper to adopt, if there now was any workaround.

All in all, this seems more as a way to clean the slate for now and for the future, considering NTP's claims were more or less invalidated already, and it's likely there actually was a workaround, somehow.

Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek: "The distraction is gone now for RIM and we expect that in the next 30 days we're going to see a lot of product announcement from RIM, and we think investors are going to applaud," he said.

Quote: The companies said the new agreement relates to all patents owned and controlled by NTP and covers all of RIM's products, services and technologies.
