Yahoo! guesses trends at CTIA
My 10 cent comments on the mentioned trends:
TV on phones: But I believe this will be yawned at this year. Also, it's a question of semantics, as operators have introduced Mobile TV that's just video streaming over 3G. If the price and functionality is right the consumers will not care which technology is used.
More 3G, heading towards 4G: But there will continue to be a lack of revenue-generating services, which is what's important. Corporate users have a need for higher-speed networking, but that's a small niche. Music downloads might do the trick.
MVNO mania: MVNOs must niche themselves to survive. I expect an increase in corporate-focused MVNOs due to this.
Mas musica: This requires lower airtime fees to take off.
Blackberry's back: But competition now smells blood. Personally I want corporate email on my existing phone. I (and most companies) don't want to buy yet a new device. Enter Java and Symbian OS applications.
Thin is in: Consumers seem to consider thin much more important than technical features. That's not good for those that heavily invest in new high-speed infrastructure and new information services.
The rogues' gallery: The only thing I can come up with here is that we will see more diffentiation in phone form factors and new features. All phones seem to have the basic features people need (and way more), so differentiation is the way to stand out, be it e.g. to make thinner phones, add alphanumeric keypads, GPS, higher-quality cameras and the like, but not necessarily all in the same device.
