Vodafone launches map service in Germany
The Mobile Earth service (developed by LocatioNet) shows both stylized maps and aerial photos, similar to Google Maps/Earth etc, and provides means to search for addresses and pan the map in whatever direction.
Quote: Java platform creates a user-friendly interface and allows smart handling of maps that cannot be achieved with WAP ... previous WAP applications have resulted in very poor user experience.
I mentioned the lack of location/positioning support in Java in my previous post, that's yet available only in a few phones.
I guess that if location information is at all used by the Mobile Earth service it is received from the mobile system rather than directly from the phone. Otherwise there would be few phones that would support this service. Actually the press release doesn't mention location, so it would in theory be enough with the simplest MIDP 1.0 phones.
