Google Gmail, now in Java ME
Update: Added some more links, including to the press release from Google. Will Yahoo! and MSN etc feel pressure to improve their mobile email support? It sure will.

Update: This works well from outside of US as well, even though you get a warning message. I tried it on my M600i and the application scales correctly to the phone display despite the phone's unorthodox 240 by 320 resolution (which is easy to do in Java ME). I wonder why they chose to make a 2-level menu, that cripples usability a bit, but I applaud the general ease of use. Worth a spin. Download it via your phone from "gmail.com/app". I'm a bit surprised it gets so much press though. Was the browser access to Gmail that bad?

Most interesting is the mentioned arguments for why a Java ME solution is better than a browser ditto:
* Five times faster access and use.
* Fewer keystrokes for reading, composing, and searching mail.
* Attachments that are automatically resized to fit your device.

Surely attachments could be resized on the server based on information about the actual phone etc, but a browser-based solution can't be as user-friendly as a Java ME application optimally can be, due to how a browser works.

Drawbacks:
* Doesn't check emails autonomously
* Application is free but of course the data transfer is not
Due to the latter the former is good.

Quote: is currently compatible with all J2ME enabled phones in the United States
That must have required a lot of testing. It must work also outside USA, but it's much harder to guarantee function in those more "chaotic" markets.

Comments:
In fact, if Google ever got around to releasing a single app that combined Gmail, Gtalk and GCal, they might have an instant winner on their hands.

Actually not google but another application named Morange has put all these together, push mail, IM, calendar, virtual disk , Push RSs etc, etc, It ranked high in GetJar and so far the users love it

Morange looks really powerful with lots of functionality. More than I've seen in any other specific application. The requirements on the phone are pretty high though.

Morange (full version) doesn't connect to the server, so I couldn't try it out. Others have also complained it doesn't connect.
