The latest in geekware: Use your mobile phone as a water heater
I just came up with an idea that actually works (which in my case is peculiar). It's a known fact that sending many SMSs within a short amount of time makes the phone heat up surrounding materials. The simple reason is that mobile phones transmit microwaves, the same kind you have in your microwave oven.
To make practical use of this I wrote a simple Java application that sends SMSs continuously (one per second by default). By sending the SMSs back to my own phone I actually increased the heating efficiency. As I have a subscription with free SMSs, there's no cost for doing this.
If I put the phone close to a cup of water (with added coffee (possibly Irish), tea, cocoa, or whatever you might fancy) the cup gets hot enough within 2 minutes. The application stops sending SMSs after a configurable time, and then emits a sound to indicate the beverage is ready.
Please don't put the phone in the cup though. The Java application is pretty robust, but a mobile phone usually doesn't like taking a bath.
You can download the application to your phone at 'wap.abiro.com/moboil/'. Given enough interest I'll launch this application commercially.
